An aggressive creature known as Quake has been infiltrating military bases and eliminating all personnel. The beast has been able to do this through the use of "slipgates," portals that can bridge any distance between worlds in a matter of seconds. Now it is up to you to give this beast a little taste of its own medicine! There's only one catch: you'll have to do it alone. Quake's minions have ransacked the base where you were stationed and left no survivors. So get moving, soldier -- Quake must be stopped!

Quake for the Nintendo 64 is a port of id Software's first-person shooter of the same name, released on the PC in 1996. Players must progress through castle-like environments as they confront grunts, enforcers, rottweilers, knights, death knights, zombies, ogres and six more polygonal beasts. The object of the game is to survive each 3D stage while searching for the slipgate to advance to the next world. Besides eliminating hostile threats, players must also be wary of floorplates, buttons, motion detectors and other devices that can reveal secrets or traps.

In order to help you fight the good fight, eight weapons are available within the game: an axe, shotgun, double-barreled shotgun, nailgun, super nailgun, grenade launcher, rocket launcher and thunderbolt. Players must also keep a watchful eye on their ammo, although four types of crates will assist in keeping weapons at full capacity. Also available are health kits, biosuits (to breathe underwater), three types of armor, the Ring of Shadows (invisibility), Pentagram of Protection (temporary invulnerability) and Quad Damage (four times the firepower). These power-ups may prove useful in surviving the hazards found on each stage.

Players must learn to deal with water, slime, lava, crushing walls, spikes, radioactive containers and other forms of dangers as they advance through the 25 levels in the game. Want to take a break? You'll either receive a password or have the opportunity to save progress with a Controller Pak after each map. The Nintendo 64 version also supports split-screen battles against a friend in one of seven arenas, with an option to set limits on time or frags (kills). Those owning the Rumble Pak can literally feel the kick of a shotgun or the steady hum of a nailgun!
